Watch Your Mouth!

But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.(Matt.12:36)

Ever notice when people ask for your opinion and they want to know whether it is great, good, or bad? Great, excellent, awesome…etc; these are just some of the words people use to describe how great, excellent, or awesome something really is. Bad, poor, not worth it…etc; these are some of the words to describe the opposite. Then, you have somewhere in the middle. Not great, not bad, just good.

It’s saddening to see how people have taken the word “good” and used it as a meaning of “its o.k.” I’ve heard people say “it’s all good” meaning it could be better. When you read the scripture, from the very beginning, when God did something He said it was good. So this tells me that “good” is better, no, much better, no, very much better (you get the idea) than great, excellent or awesome or any other word you could find to describe how “good” something really is.

Think about it… do you really think that when God made the world and every thing in it, when He was finished, He took a step back, looked at what He made and said “Well… it could be better, but it’s “good” enough.” I think not!

What about when people say “holy moly”, “holy mackerel” or maybe “holy $#!?” Moly is a mythical herb with magical powers. Mackerel is a fish, and I’m sure you can figure out what “$#!?” means. Are people really saying these things are holy? I would hate to think that “$#!?” is holy and that we should praise and worship it.

God’s word says, on the seventh day he rested… and made it holy (Gen.2:2-3), “…were you are standing is holy ground.” (Ex.3:5), “…a holy nation, people belonging to God…” (1Pet.2:9). There are approximately 532 references to the word holy in the bible. I could not find any reference to the holy herb “moly”, the holy fish “mackerel” or the holy anything that was a human idea.

How about when things don’t go your way or when you smash your finger with a hammer or stub your toe, and you yell out “OH GOD!!!” or “JESUS!!!” Not because you are crying out for God to heal what just happened, but as a release of anger, pain, frustration, anguish…etc. You don’t hear some yell out “ALAH!!!”  or “BUDDAH!!!” when something bad happens. In the same way or when someone gets surprised they would say “Oh my God!”  or maybe “O.M.G.!”

When you do this you are calling out to the Lord, our God. Immediately He is there saying “I’m here my child…” waiting to hear your voice, to have an intimate conversation with Him. Only to realize you’re just having a conversation with someone else, or yourself. By doing this, this is Satan’s way of down-playing the Christian faith. Making you think what you say is not harming your faith.

Moral of the story… WATCH YOUR MOUTH!!!
